Kishor Yadav Kommanaboina

Software Engineer at Snap

Kishor Yadav Kommanaboina is a distinguished software engineer specializing in big data, with over a decade of experience in building scalable, efficient, and reliable data systems. His career is marked by an exceptional ability to solve complex technical challenges and lead impactful projects that drive significant value for the organizations he serves. Currently, Kishor is part of Snap’s Caching team, where he focuses on stabilizing and optimizing caching infrastructure. His efforts have ensured seamless operations while driving the adoption of cutting-edge caching technologies, resulting in improved application performance and reliability across Snap's platform. Previously, while working on Snap’s A/B team, Kishor led multiple projects that directly impacted the company's real-time experimentation capabilities. His redesign of the A/B server instrumentation logging pipeline resulted in a 400% improvement in real-time A/B data, allowing Snap to run more precise experiments that contributed to better product decisions. Additionally, Kishor reduced A/B server instrumentation data waste by 33X, streamlining data processing and cutting resource consumption, which contributed to operational cost savings. Kishor also played a pivotal role in modernizing the company’s central ETL pipeline, which eventually supported 1.8 trillion+ telemetry events for 750+ million monthly active users with 99.9995% data durability. His biggest achievement was supporting the username change feature, where he successfully moved critical username references/dependencies for 1.8+ trillion events without compromising data quality. This achievement was a critical blocker for supporting the username change, as covered in the press by TechCrunch (https://techcrunch.com/2022/02/17/snapchat-change-username/). Kishor was directly responsible for managing the stability and operations of Snap’s central telemetry data pipeline, navigating complex challenges that earned him the Most Technically Challenging Award. His cost-saving initiatives resulted in $3.1 million in annual savings, earning him Snap’s End-of-Year Cost Award. At Twitter, Kishor was responsible for modernizing the ads measurement technology stack, improving the operational efficiency of running brand surveys. He led the in-house Lift Calculation platform, a crucial measurement tool for gauging ROI for advertisers, reducing turnaround time from 4 weeks with third-party companies like Nielsen to just 1 week. This platform had the potential to save Twitter $60 million annually, while also making brand surveys accessible as a measurement tool for smaller advertisers due to the reduced costs from the in-house solution. During his time at Amazon, Kishor was handpicked by Amazon Berrio’s team leadership to unblock a critical SVP-level visibility initiative—Amazon’s joint venture with Cloudtail in India, a first-of-its-kind use case globally. This project, which received significant press coverage, including Inc42 (https://inc42.com/features/cloudtail-checks-out-of-amazons-cart-will-appario-follow-suit/) and Livemint (https://www.livemint.com/Companies/1EdpKoAY7GoZLh57pXuwkO/Amazon-India-top-seller-Cloudtails-revenue-rises-fourfold-t.html), was essential in expanding Amazon's business in India. Cloudtail's revenue surged fourfold to ₹7,149 crore (about $1 billion) in FY17, demonstrating the immense scale and success of the initiative. Kishor coached a newly bootstrapped remote team to effectively run the operations independently for the Amazon-Cloudtail accounting use case. Kishor has built strong foundations in computer science and software engineering, earning his master’s degree from The Ohio State University with a CGPA of 3.76/4, where he also received the Best Project Award for a software engineering project. He completed his B.Tech from IIIT Hyderabad, securing admission with an All India Rank of 981 out of 400,000 students who appeared for the AIEEE exam. Outside his work, Kishor has published in 10+ journals on solutions that have unlocked efficiency and enhanced decision-making in critical industries such as financial technology, logistics and supply chain, natural disaster detection, and healthcare. Beyond his technical expertise, Kishor is a leader who is passionate about mentoring and developing his teams. He has fostered a collaborative work environment where innovation thrives, streamlining processes and setting new standards for excellence. His forward-thinking approach continues to push the boundaries of data technology, with a focus on making a meaningful, real-world impact. So far, Kishor has conducted 150+ interviews for Snap, Twitter, and Amazon. At Snap, he set guidelines for effectively managing operational incidents and following up with thorough postmortems for an org of 25+ engineers. Kishor Yadav Kommanaboina’s visionary leadership and technical achievements have not only shaped the success of the companies he has worked with but have also paved the way for future innovations in big data infrastructure.
